Spillway Update from the Grand Valley Lakes POA, Inc. Board of Directors

10-20-2020: The main lake spillway and gate are in need of repair. To properly determine the extent of repairs required, a company with professional divers was contracted to provide an assessment and repair recommendations.

 

The dive team arrived on 10.19.2020 to assess the condition of the gate needed to lower the lake level. They videotaped and recorded an audio description of the entire dive. Measurements were made and pictures of all the current gate markings were taken. All this information was sent to the home office. The company has engineers on retainer to review the information and recommend a course of action. This company does have the capability and experienced crew to do the repair.

 

Tom Wein and Earl Butler were present during the assessment and requested a preliminary plan and estimate for the repairs ASAP. This will allow the board to begin the planning process. A complete plan and quote will then follow when available.

 

The condition of the gate as described is much worse than anticipated. A shaft replacement is not a viable solution. The gate is corroded and large metal flaking is occurring. The thickness of the remaining gate metal at this point is unknown. The guides that support the gate are badly corroded and actually fused to gate in places. The concrete structure the gate is attached to is deteriorated to the point that it is crumbling when touched and needs to be replaced.

 

Based on the preliminary assessment provided, and the potential risk for an uncontrolled structural failure, the lake will not be lowered as planned this year.
